3 content types (besides video) that benefit from ECDNs

Enterprise content delivery networks are getting attention as a video tool, and with good reason. They use software-defined technology to streamline video content delivery by enabling organizations to improve network routing, maximizing bandwidth resources. However, video is not the only content type that can benefit from this functionality. Many typical enterprise tasks require users to move so much data through the network that they create significant strain on throughput resources. Furthermore, even when the network handles the data associated with such tasks, it can struggle to support other users as so much bandwidth is going to the more demanding services.

An ECDN can help you overcome all of these issues by moving data through the network in the most strategic way possible, avoiding bottlenecks and similar issues. Three non-video data types that benefit the most from ECDNs include:

1. File sharing

File delivery can prove a major productivity barrier for organizations. Large files can easily get clogged moving through an Ethernet system – repeatedly getting dropped and resent as they use most of the network’s capacity and get bumped once they intersect with other data packets. This is especially problematic as many file sharing tasks come at times when people need to collaborate with some sense of urgency. For example, if somebody’s device goes down right before a presentation and they need a file sent to another computer in a hurry, you can’t afford to have that transfer slowed by dropped data packets and similar problems. 3. Data-rich apps and services

Many researchers, lab workers, data analysts and similar experts depend heavily on apps and services that use incredibly large amounts of data to support day-to-day functionality. This is especially true since the rise of the cloud, as cloud computing has enabled organizations to combine the hardware resources of many machines into clusters that deliver and process data quickly, then send that information to users through web apps.

These apps tend to target the most limited part of your network – the WAN – just like other web services, making it extremely easy for them to create major performance problems. As more organizations move high-resolution images, large files and similar data types through the WAN, the burden on the network rises quickly. This is furthered by day-to-day cloud app use, and taken to an entirely new level when you start dealing with data-rich apps.

The trouble with data-rich apps moving through the network underlines the common theme for all of these data types – more services are depending on the WAN, and the WAN is generally the most difficult part of the network to add capacity.

You can invest in private lines, dedicated network links and similar solutions for data-rich apps or high-resolution images, as you’ll often know where users will be leveraging those solutions, but that isn’t exactly a cost-efficient option.
