Mobile, cloud top enterprise video trends

By Stephen Blankenship – Director, Product Management

Writing for Business Insider, Jeff Fissel, co-founder of video software company KZO Innovations, recently identified several of the trends affecting video usage in the workplace. Among those trends, Fissel noted that mobile devices and cloud computing are having a significant impact on the way workers access content, whether it’s for employee engagement, collaboration or other functions.

Video and the cloud

Cloud computing has been one of the most disruptive IT trends in the workplace in recent years. More than just video, the technology has changed the way businesses deliver applications, communicate and access data. According to a February report from InformationWeek Reports, 33 percent of companies are using some form of cloud computing service this year, up from 31 percent in 2011 and 22 percent in 2010.

When it comes to video, the cloud has its clear benefits. As Fissel pointed out, the cloud allows businesses to easily store and access large amounts of video. It can also be beneficial to video delivery. For example, by implementing a cloud-based enterprise content delivery network (ECDN), a company can deliver video to employees regardless of their location or the platform on which they choose to access content.

The ECDN is also advantageous because it puts minimal strain on the company’s network. Instead of trying to pull bandwidth from other areas of the network, the ECDN creates a dedicated line of delivery for video, ensuring network performance is not impacted and taking away from other more mission-critical applications.

The rise of mobile video

It’s impossible to ignore the impact mobility has had on the workplace. Whereas employees were once more or less tethered to their desktops, smartphones and tablets have given them the freedom to roam and still get their work done.

This freedom has migrated to video as well. As Fissel noted, more employees are turning to their mobile devices to watch video. However, employees aren’t just using these devices to watch clips on YouTube or catch up on “Breaking Bad.” They’re also finding mobile devices handy for live streaming corporate events and videoconferencing with colleagues on the other side of the country.

By leveraging an ECDN that supports mobile devices, a business can give its employees the opportunity to watch company video from wherever they please, whether it’s in the office, at home or on the road.

Fissel also highlight several other trends that are impacting enterprise video, including HTML5, social media and integration within enterprise applications. As video becomes more prevalent in the workplace, it will continue to evolve in light of these and other trends. For businesses to take advantage of video, they must adapt their delivery strategies in a way that makes full use of video benefits without negatively impacting the company network.
