Networks often require upgrades to handle video

Video is on the rise in the enterprise. The media format has been popular for a variety of functions for a long time, but the rising accessibility of cameras and the growing prevalence of online video sites have made content creation and viewing a prominent social practice. This trend is spreading to businesses. According to a recent InfoWorld report announcing a future webinar, businesses often have to consider upgrading their networks in some way to handle the delivery requirements presented by video.

The news source explained that consumer video trends are being embraced in the workplace, making enterprise video and other forms of collaboration much more popular, whether in the form of unified communications or an internal business video streaming solution.

According to the report, the key problem is that so many networks are not equipped to handle video. Most legacy network systems lack the performance capabilities or features needed to support video plans. Most rich media formats require the capacity to support converged IP traffic, quality-of-service capabilities and bandwidth management tools. Without such solutions in place, most networks will be unable to handle the demands created by a video solution.

Video has the potential to contribute to considerable business gains, including better collaboration, centralized management and improved productivity, the report said. However, leveraging these gains can be difficult without the right networking upgrades.

One of the best ways to deal with video is simply to adopt a delivery platform designed specifically for the media type. WAN optimization and quality-of-service solutions can help with video, but multicasting, peer-assisted video software and enterprise content delivery networks will usually be much more effective. These video-specific solutions not only help the network handle video more effectively, but also ensure video use will not get in the way with other data delivery needs.
